A Tribute to Dr. Maya Angelou

We can always count on you to have something positive to say
Your words contain power, and enlighten us even in our darkest days
Your compassion for your fellow man is unmistakable
And you have always encouraged young ladies to be responsible  
To be all that they can be and to take hold of their destiny
If they are to become successful leaders in today’s society
Those who know your voice, know it well
In the poems and short stories you would tell  
Every time you get ready to speak, we know something
fulfilling is coming
That will uplift the downtrodden, while giving life meaning
Meaning, to the questions that caught us by surprise
It is people like you that help us to realize  
That life is too short, for us to keep fighting against each other
Sometimes we fight so hard, we don’t even recognize our own brother
So this is why your words are so profound
Words so powerful, they keep us company when no one’s around  
So the time has come for those who appreciate you to say thanks, for all you’ve done
Thanks for paving the way, for all the other
Maya Angelou’s that will come
We thank you for being a strong woman, holding your ground
And for making a strong foundation, to deliver that resounding sound
